Master Sergeant William "Roy" Sherry June 24, 1927 - May 8, 2016
It is with a heavy heart that I must post that our member and friend Roy Sherry passed away May 8, 2016 in OKC. Roy was a strong supporter of the League and always ready to help with any activities. William Roy Sherry died on May 8, 2016 in Oklahoma City after becoming ill earlier in the year. He was born on June 24, 1927 to Edward Sherman & Mamie Lola Sherry. He attended Central High School in Oklahoma City. After graduation he became a letter carrier while he attended college to become a drafting engineer. He left college and entered the U.S. Marine Corp. in 1945 and served during the final days of WWII.
After the war he left active duty and transferred to the Reserves and went back to being a letter carrier. When the Korean War started he was called up with his reserve artillery unit, Fox Battery 2nd battalion, 14th Marines and shipped out to Korea. He was a survivor of one on the Marine Corps toughest battles at the Chosin reservoir. He maintained his friendships with other survivors of that battle as a life long member of the "Chosin few".
He returned home and remained in the reserves and once again resumed his career as a letter carrier. He worked out of the Shartel station and carried mail for Penn Square Mall, 50 Penn Place and the surrounding neighborhood from the day they opened until he retired,
He continued to serve in the Marine Corps for 30 years and retired in 1975 as a Master Sergeant. All of his close friends called him "Top". After 30 years as a mail carrier he retired from the post office in 1981.
After retirement he was involved with the Marine Corp League where he held virtually every post within the local detachment. He also stayed active with the National Assoc. of Letter Carriers local branch 458 where he was a member for over 50 years. He was past secretary and was involved heavily in the Boy Scouts Troop 117.
He married Betty Stephens on June 28, 1974. She preceded him in death on July 1, 2008.He was also preceded in death by his parents Edward & Mamie Sherry, his sister Lola & her husband George Puckett.
He is survived by his son John Sherry and wife Sandra, his grandson Stephen and wife Olivia, his great-grandson Ayden, his brother James and wife Kathy, and their children Stacie & Chris, his nephew Steve Puckett and wife Dru, and their children Scott & Amanda and her husband Kenneth Cargill, and his niece Sherrie Lee Puckett.
Roy lived by the motto "Once a Marine, always a Marine" He was honored by Fox Battery as the oldest marine at the marine corps ball every year for the last 6 years. Funeral services will be at 10:00am, Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Guardian West Funeral Home Chapel. Viewing and visitation will be from 4pm-8pm on Friday, May 13, at Guardian West Funeral Home.
